What is Massage Therapy?

Massage is an effective form of soft tissue therapy that helps with pain management, improved movement and better muscle function. There are several different forms of massage therapy available, and a professional massage therapist may suggest different types for different needs. In short, it is a form of manual therapy that includes holding, moving, and applying pressure to the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia.

Massage is an excellent method for treating muscle soreness and aiding in the recovery from injury. Massage has been shown to increase recovery times for musculo-skeletal injuries. Many people even use regular massage to maintain a good range of movement and reduce the risk of injuries. Sportspeople, for example, rely heavily on massage to stay at their best.

When undergoing physiotherapy, massage often forms a key part of this. While massage can certainly be used in isolation for certain issues, it’s usually part of a range of treatment methods. For most injuries, pain and mobility issues, it’s likely that massage will form part of your treatment.

What Can Massage Therapy Help With?

Massage therapy is perhaps one of the oldest methods of healing in the world. That’s because it has so many practical uses and can assist with many different conditions. Physiotherapists use massage regularly because it can aid in the recovery and treatment plans for so many patients.

Some of the many benefits of massage include:

  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Better circulation
  • Improved joint mobility and flexibility
  • Relaxation
  • Lowering of stress hormones
  • Stimulation of the lymphatic system
  • Quicker recovery from soft tissue injuries
  • Reduced anxiety

As such, massage is often recommended for a wide variety of disorders, conditions and injuries. It’s certainly not all about repairing strained muscles, however this is a common use for massage. In fact, there’s barely a condition that can’t be at least helped with massage.

Alongside other treatment methods, many people have found massage effective for dealing with:

  • Back pain and chronic pain
  • Stress
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety and depression
  • High blood pressure
  • Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)

Massage can also be used to help improve the comfort levels of those suffering from a chronic disease or illnesses such as cancer.

Different Types of Massage Therapy

There are several different forms of massage out there, and as a qualified massage therapist on the Gold Coast, we’re skilled and trained in all of them. Each offers different types of benefit, and therefore will be recommended for different needs. As with any muscle and soft-tissue manipulation, some can cause a level of discomfort. That’s why it’s important to seek assistance from qualified massage professionals, so you get the right massage for you.

Remedial Massage Remedial massage involves the assessment and treatment of biomechanical dysfunction or injury. Special mobilisation techniques are employed depending on the nature of the injury or dysfunction, and the exact type of massage will vary from patient to patient.

Sports Massage Sports massage is similar to remedial massage in many ways, as the goal is to target a particular injury or problem area. However, sports massage isn’t necessarily a technique as such, but rather a range of techniques. The types of massage used will vary, but they’re all designed to enhance performance and assist in the recovery of injuries.

Deep Tissue Massage Deep tissue massage is often used for treatment of musculo-skeletal injuries and muscle strains. It involves using long, deep strokes to target the inner layers of muscles. The benefits of deep tissue massage include breaking up scar tissue, reducing muscle tension, increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.

Trigger Point Therapy Trigger points are areas of nerves and muscle that are aggravated or stressed in some way. Many people might refer to them as ‘knots’. Trigger point massage therapy involves focussing on these trigger points and applying a pressure/release pattern to alleviate pain. Trigger points often cause referred pain elsewhere in the body, and this type of massage can be an effective treatment.

Relaxation Massage Relaxation massage is more specifically used to assist people suffering from anxiety, depression or increased stress. While many other forms of massage target particular parts of the body, relaxation massage is broader. The goal is to help patients relax, using less pressure than some other types of massage.
